Gold Rises to Session Highs as U.S. Retail Sales Beat Expectations

Gold prices moved to session highs on Thursday after U.S. retail sales data showed consumer spending increased more than economists had anticipated, according to Kitco News.

The U.S. Commerce Department reported that retail sales rose 0.8% in September, following a revised gain of 1.3% in August. The September result exceeded the consensus forecast of a 0.3% increase.

On an annual basis, retail sales climbed 6.3%, the report showed, compared with expectations of a 5.2% rise and after a revised 5.6% increase in August.

Core sales, which exclude vehicle sales, rose 0.9% in August, above the consensus estimate of a 0.5% gain and following a revised 1.4% reading for August.

Spot gold traded near session highs after the data was released, last changing hands at $4,154.16 for a gain of 1.20% on the session.
